ACU National Championship 2nd round and Club Championship round 3

Its “all change” and “hold on very tightly now please” at the top of the points tables in the latest rounds of the championships.

A nasty fall in the first race of the day at Mallory park denied ACU and Club open class leader Paul Whiting any points scoring, however he remains at the top of the Club open class table ….but only just, as despite running out of fuel in the first race Kevin Burton reduced the gap between him and the top spot to just 3 points shy of Paul, with Sam Grief knocking Martin Robbins off of the third spot.

In the ACU Table Paul again stays at the top but Sam Grief jumps in to take the second place in the accumulated totals. Martin Robbins retains joint third place.

The Air Cooled championship, Newcomer Michael Houghton dramatically leap frogs up the table to top spot opening up a 28 point lead over second place man Alan Naul.

See the Championship points tables for the full picture and the full race report in the next club newsletter.

Sad news of Angel Nieto.

We were deeply saddened to hear today of the tragic death of 50cc racing legend Angel Nieto.

Angel died following a road traffic accident  on a quad bike in Ibiza.

Holder of 13 world titles, he was a giant of lightweight motorcycle racing revered amongst the whole  racing community.

He was famously superstitious and always referred to his number of championship titles as 12 +1 !

He was an inspiration to all generations of 50cc racers and will be sadly missed We send our sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.

Sam Grief storms to victory again at Aberdare Park.

Another terrific Aberdare Park meeting was held last weekend thanks to Derek Smith and all his crew who made the meeting run smoothly as usual.

Sam Grief as usual on top form stormed to victory in both the ACU round and our club championship.

It was great to see Allan Richardson back on track and also Richard Done who came all the way from the Isle of Man to compete. Mick Smedley and Nigel Franklin  had an excellent weekend of racing along with Colin Purslow who had 2 second places ! The crowd loved the 50’s and the mix of Classic and Freetech bikes over the weekend was very exciting. A full report will be in our next club newsletter.

Club Championship round 6 ACU Championship round 5 Lydden Hill Circuit

A fantastic day’s racing at the club’s visit to Lydden Hill circuit in Kent for round 5 of the ACU championship resulted in a win for Paul Whiting placing him third overall in the championship, at the moment. Marty Robbins, having taken second place on the day, has overtaken Sam Grief for the top spot in the championship after Sam had a rare mechanical failure. Kevin Burton secured third on the day maintaining his fourth position on the table.

The last ACU round is on the 24th of September at Cadwell Park with all still to play for as any of the top 3 could potentially clinch the title !

The picture to the right shows  both the Classic and our friends in the Freetech class at Lydden Hill.

The win from Hudson Kennaugh secures him the Freetech championship this year. Well done and congratulations to Hudson from the Classic club. Securing second place in this round was Mark Bainbridge and Bradley Wilson in the third spot. Second and third places are still to play for in the Freetech championship !

The picture to the left shows  the winners podium from our own club championship. Sam Grief, the winner on the day, tightened his grip on the top spot in the club championship. Marty Robbins again in another good performance clinched second on the day with Paul Whiting taking the third spot.
